WHAT I DO:
Helping communicate complex business ideas through visual storytelling
I have been drawing all my life, even receiving a prize in the Times Young Cartoonist of the Year competition in 1995 - a pretty long time ago now. After studying Drawing at Camberwell College of Arts, and a brief jaunts in the graphic design, ecommerce and education worlds I have pursued a career as a live scribe.
Based in Oxford I formed Live Illustration Ltd in 2015 to better bring my work and that of my fellow scribes to the world. It’s a micro agency to help bring some of the best Graphic Recorders in the industry together.
This work, so closely aligned to the ups and downs of the British, European and global economy, has taken me on a journey across the world. Stepping in and out of events, board rooms and gatherings in every industry and sector imaginable.
From transport, government, health and finance the need for clarity and understanding brought by quick visualisation has been a constant. The work has changed and evolved over the years from sticking bits of paper on the wall, using iPads and digital media through to massive installations of artwork.
Working in this field you have to take a genuine interest in the varied sectors you find yourself in. To understand their challenges and solutions. And to be able to quickly summarise and illustrate them in front of a crowd. Beyond drawing itself it's a role that requires you to be part events professional, part facilitator and meeting planner and part consultant. Just the kind of variety I like.
When I am not working on commissioned work I like to dedicate my time, beyond dog walking and family, to creating small press comics and the occasional cartoon. A non commercial but highly satisfying creative pursuit.
